Nhonguane Lodge is located 3km from Santa Maria village, on the peaceful Bay of Maputo.  A 600m walk along the beach to the notorious Hell?s Gate - the channel separating the Santa Maria Peninsula from Inhaca Island. Facing west we enjoy beautiful sunsets over the Bay.The safari-camp consists of 3 tents that sleep 4 people per tent and offers all the comfort of the necessary amenities with en suite bathrooms, fans and mosquito nets for every bed. The camp has a large thatched roof entertainment area with kitchen, bar counter and dining area. Marula trees provide the shade for an outside braai area. All the bedding, ie linen is supplied, but not towels (bath or beach!). The kitchen is fully equipped so all pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, fridge and freezer etc.The safari-tents are serviced daily so you do not need to bring cleaning materials.  Toilet paper is supplied. There is a little restaurant in the village where you can eat as well as purchase basic items such as bread, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, rice, oil and drinks/cold drink. There is a beach bar where you can get drinks. The water is drinkable but you can bring bottled water if you prefer. The village also sells bottled water. With Inhaca a 10min boat trip across the channel. The local village of Santa Maria stock most necessities ie. bread, oil, long life-milk, salt, sugar and various fresh produce. Sea-food sold on site brought in by local vendors, prawns, crab and fish are usually available. Traveling by land, though it might take up most of a day will definitively be worthwhile for any nature lover making the trip by this means. Please be aware that this route would only be recommended if you have a 4X4 vehicle with high clearance and properly deflated tyres. The Elephant Reserve charges per vehicle R70 and R70 per person.Guests are welcome to bring their own boats. Anyone operating a boat must have a valid Skipper?s Licence. This applies to the Bay of Maputo as well as deep-sea.Permits can be bought on Inhaca Island from Safmar maritime authority. The Lodge can also arrange these permits and fishing / spearfishing licenses upon prior request. It is recommended you launch bigger boats in Maputo (about 1 hour cruise) from Maputo Marina or Clube Naval. You can also leave your vehicles there safely. It is best to come across the Bay at high tide when the water is right up to the Lodge. It is possible to tow smaller boats as long as you have wide tyres on your boat trailer and remember to deflate to 1.2. This transfer will increase your travel time dramatically so please ensure you are prepared for such delays. At the Lodge you launch your boat once at the designated launch site at Santa Maria village, we do have a skipper at the lodge that can assist with this.**Please note that it is not permissible to drive on the beach not even to launch your boat.**A boat can then be left moored in the bay in front of the Lodge throughout your stay. The Lodge can assist you in acquiring a local Ghilly ? this can be arranged at the Reception, the Ghilly will assist with your boat, moving, cleaning etc. These lodge-Ghillies are pre approved and the only Ghillies we would recommend. A standard fee of R50 per day and R50 per night is charged to avoid any unexpected ?bargaining? at the end of your stay.
